The Affordable Care Act and the Labor Market

The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and the Institute of Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois invite submissions to a conference on The Affordable Care Act and the Labor Market, to be held March 21, 2014 at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Conference Highlights:

  • Presentations of unpublished, original scholarly research related to the potential impact of the Affordable Care Act on the labor market.
  • A panel discussion featuring David Card, Class of 1950 Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics of the University of California, Berkeley, and Jonathan Gruber, Professor in the Department of Economics of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Submission Deadline: October 15, 2013

We invite scholars engaged in research relevant to the conference theme to submit their work for inclusion in the conference. Approximately 5 to 6 papers will be selected for presentation. The organizing committee will give priority to original research with direct public policy application. A few examples of priority research areas are:

  • How will the expansion of Medicaid and the availability of income-based, government subsidies for health insurance affect labor supply decisions of different types of workers, and if changes occur, how will these compositional changes in the labor force affect wages?
  • How will the expansion of health insurance under the Affordable Care Act affect worker personal finances and use of social programs?
  • How will employers reorganize their workforce to minimize the cost of the Affordable Care Act and what effect will this have on employment and wages?
  • How will employers alter the structure of health insurance benefits and how will this affect wages and employment of different types of workers?
  • How will expansion of health insurance under the Affordable Care Act affect worker productivity, wages, employment, and mobility?

Participants will be selected on the basis of papers or extended abstracts of approximately 500 words. Conference organizers will pay travel and lodging expenses for one author of each accepted paper.
